75th conference events
2009 was a special year for NZCER, as it marked 75 years since we were set up in 1934.
We held a number of events during 2009, focused on important educational questions and held in a number of locations across the country. They honoured NZCER’s long history and its contribution to New Zealand education, while putting the spotlight firmly on the current work of NZCER and the way it is both informing and leading thinking in areas of current and anticipated significance.

NZCER Student Engagement Conference Series:
Engaging young people in learning: why does it matter and what can we do?
On 9 and 11 September NZCER ran a Student Engagement Conference series, bringing together New Zealand and international experts in this important field. Presentations covered: evidence that increased engagement leads to better educational, social, and psychological outcomes; how to improve engagement in learning through research–informed practice; lessons for engaging Maori students from the Te Kotahitanga project; and insights from NZCER’s student engagement survey Me and My School.
NZCER Curriculum Conference series:
The Collaborative Path to Implementation
From May 4-8, 2009, we ran a curriculum conference series in four centres, where local school leaders shared their curriculum implementation stories, and attendees took part in discussions. The presentations and discussion were around five themes: leading professional development in your school; implementing the key competencies; working with all the learning areas; greater involvement of students in decision making about learning; and engaging the community in curriculum conversations.
