Herbison Lectures 1999–2004

Herbison Lectures 1999-2004
 NZ$22.00 ex GST

Compiled by Bev Webber

Each year, those attending the conference of the New Zealand Association for Research in Education (NZARE) are inspired by the Jean Herbison lecture. This lecture was named after Dame Jean Herbison in recognition of her outstanding contribution to tertiary education.

Dame Jean was the first woman to hold the post of Chancellor of a New Zealand university—the University of Canterbury. Other positions she held include associate and acting director of Christchurch Polytechnic and vice-principal of Christchurch Teachers College. She was also awarded a Fulbright scholarship and an Imperial Relations Trust fellowship.

In honor of her work Jean Herbison was granted the title of Dame of the British Empire (DBE). She has also been presented with the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Medal and the CMG.

Given Dame Jean’s contribution to education, it is fitting that a leading researcher is chosen each year to present the Herbison lecture. In recognition of the quality and significance of the work of these researchers the NZARE Council has undertaken to make the Jean Herbison lectures available to a wider audience through this publication.

The lectures are:

  • Pedagogy of the gaps: Lessons on evidence, from the beach (Alison Jones)
  • Changing the lens: Sociocultural curriculum and research in early childhood in New Zealand (Margaret Carr)
  • Whakamua Whakamuri Maori research (Arohia Durie)
  • The cultural myths and the realities of teaching and learning (Graham Nuthall)
  • Social justice through (teacher) education: Issues of cultural identity, literacy, and schooling (Margaret Maaka)
  • Science can inform educational practice: The case of literacy (William Tunmer)
