NZCER is pleased to host a conference to explore the important area of
assessment of adult learning.
Adult learning is a growing area of focus for NZCER, enabling us to
contribute considerable research-based knowledge on assessing literacy and
numeracy competencies. We are keen to debate questions such as what do we expect
to achieve from assessment regimes in literacy and numeracy, at individual,
organisational, national and international levels. What role can the national
assessment tool play?
What is the impact of assessment on learners? What are the particular issues
for Maori learners? This conference brings together research, policy and
practice. It brings together people from across the tertiary and workplace
learning sectors. It aims to add to the knowledge base about the assessment of
adult learners’ literacy and numeracy competencies in a variety of learning
contexts. The conference will discuss the theoretical and research underpinnings
of assessment and encourage debate about the pros and cons of particular forms
of assessment.
Conference attendees will also get a behind-the-scenes (theoretical and
research informed are the aspect we’re trying to convey) perspective on the
Literacy and Numeracy for Adults Assessment tool, developed by NZCER for the
Tertiary Education Commission in partnership with the Australian Council for
Educational Research (ACER) and IT company Fronde.

NZCER 2009 Conferences:
2009 was a special year for NZCER, marking
75 years since we were set up in 1934. We held a number of special events.
We held a number of events during 2009, focused on important educational
questions and held in a number of locations across the country. They honoured
NZCER’s long history and its contribution to New Zealand education, while
putting the spotlight firmly on the current work of NZCER and the way it is both
informing and leading thinking in areas of current and anticipated
significance.
