Development of a Literacy and Numeracy Assessment for Youth

Invitation to provide advice on the development of a new assessment for youth

The Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) has asked the New Zealand Council for Educational Research (NZCER) to develop online reading and numeracy assessments for youth (15-25 year olds). These youth assessments will be part of the Literacy and Numeracy for Adults Assessment Tool.

To ensure that the assessments are engaging and relevant for young people, we need to hear from young people themselves and those working with young people. As part of this consultation process we have developed online surveys to gather information from educators and youth.

Survey for educators

There is a survey for educators to complete online. This survey will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. The educator survey is for:

  • teachers who are teaching students aged 15 and above in secondary schools or alternative education programmes.
  • teachers involved in vocational training.
  • tutors who are teaching young people aged 15-25 years in tertiary education programmes . This would include tutors teaching in Youth Guarantee and vocational training programmes.
  • literacy and numeracy specialists, particularly those working with young people. This could include those providing learning support.
