National Standards almost seven years on

A new research report looks at how National Standards are used and viewed in primary and intermediate schools, almost seven years since they were first introduced.

National Standards in their seventh year draws on data from the NZCER National Survey of Primary and Intermediate Schools 2016. The survey includes the views of principals, teachers, Board of Trustee members and parents and whānau.

The report found that National Standards were an integral part of school decision-making, used to set goals for student achievement and for teaching and learning. However, principals and teachers had serious questions about the effect of National Standards on student achievement and motivation, whether there were differences in how standards were interpreted across schools, and whether the rest of the curriculum was being squeezed out.
