The AQ measures an individual's aggressive responses and his or her ability to channel these responses in a safe, constructive manner. It comprises 34 items and provides a total score along with five scale scores:
- Physical aggression
- Hostility
- Verbal aggression
- Indirect aggression
- Anger
Items describe various characteristics related to aggression and the respondent rates each item on a 5-point scale ranging from "Not at all like me to "Completely like me". The AQ also has a validity "type" scale called the Inconsistent Responding Index.
