The CDS is designed to measure cognitive distortions (that is, dysfunctional thinking patterns) in adults. It is a brief self-report inventory, which assesses thinking patterns that interfere with optimal functioning. Comprising 40 items, the CDS measures five kinds of cognitive distortion:
- Self-criticism
- Self-blame
- Helplessness
- Hopelessness
- Preoccupation with danger
The respondent rates each item according to frequency of occurrence during the previous month.
