My System of Career Influences (MSCI)
The MSCI provides an opportunity for students to visually represent the constellation of influences relevant to their own career story at any given point in time. It is a qualitative tool which can be administered in individual counselling sessions or in a classroom setting.
It consists of an 11-page booklet that is filled out by the students and the facilitator's guide. The booklet reflects on the following influences on the student's career decision making: my present career situation; who I am; thinking about the people around me; thinking about society and my environment; and thinking about the past, present, and future. This information is then used to draw a “system of career influences” and the student then reflects on this system and develops a plan.
The guide contains decision case studies and suggested learning activities that are particularly useful for practitioners working in school contexts to introduce career concepts and terms. The booklet is designed so that it can be administered on two separate occasions.
