The PIY comprises 270 items covering nine nonoverlapping clinical scales and 24 nonoverlapping subscales:

  • Cognitive impairment
  • Impulsivity/distractibility
  • Delinquency
  • Somatic concern
  • Family dysfunction
  • Reality distortion
  • Psychological discomfort
  • Social withdrawal
  • Social skill deficits

The PIY also has four validity scales to help determine whether the client is uncooperative, or is exaggerating, malingering, responding defensively, carelessly, or without adequate comprehension.

For a comprehensive assessment, the Personality Inventory for Children-2 provides the parent’s description of the child, the PIY provides the child’s self-report, and the Student Behaviour Survey supplies a teacher rating.
