The SIB-R measures the adaptive and problem behaviours of both able and disabled populations. It comprises 226 items of adaptive behaviour arranged into 14 subscales and grouped in four clusters: motor skills; social interaction and communication skills; personal living skills; and community living skills. It also includes an overall index of broad independence as well as a broad independence short form, an early developmental scale, and a measure of problem behaviours.

There are three forms: the full scale; the short form; and the early development form.
