Basil joined Te Wāhanga in 2015. Most recently he has been involved in research for Te Ahu o te Reo: The Health of te reo Māori in Homes and Communities; The Wellbeing of te reo in Kura and Schools; and the reo Māori component of Learning Languages, NMSSA.
Basil previously worked at Ministry for Culture and Heritage as senior historian and as editor Māori for Te Ara | Encyclopedia of New Zealand. He is a qualified translator and interpreter and has worked in the public and private sectors. He previously taught the diploma in Māori studies at Awatope, an outpost of Awanuiarangi, and in the Māori studies degree programme at EIT.
