Between June 2002 and June 2003 a Ministry of Education research project was undertaken to investigate current practice and future possibilities for environmental education (EE) policy and practice in New Zealand schools. The research included three components: a review of New Zealand and international literature in EE, a survey of nearly 200 schools involved in EE, and case studies of environmental education practices in eight primary, intermediate and secondary schools and kura kaupapa Mäori.

The purpose of this study was to identify the strategies one teacher used to support her Years 5 and 6 students develop self-regulating behaviours. How her students responded to these strategies and how they influenced students’ emerging self-regulating behaviours were also identified.

The New Zealand Council for Educational Research is acting as Research Associate for Wilton Playcentre, a designated early childhood Centre of Innovation.

Wilton Playcentre is a parent co-operative, where parents / whānau are trained to be educators of their children and take responsibility for the management and running of the playcentre. The playcentre model itself is treated as the "innovation".

This is the first research report for Wilton Playcentre, which is carrying out action research over a 3-year period to investigate the following areas:

Whaia te iti Kahurangi stems from the first iwi-Ministry of Education partnership, with Te Rünanga o Ngāti Porou. Whaia te iti Kahurangi began in 1998 with the contracting of Gardiner Parata Ltd to provide a framework for change management, to address the issues raised by ERO in its 1997 report on the quality of education received by Ngāti Porou East Coast students. They organised community consultations about the future of education in Ngāti Porou and East Coast communities, and its role in the future of Ngāti Porou. These consultations led to a strategic plan at the end of 1998.

Research on initial teacher education in New Zealand: 1993-2004. Literature review and annotated bibliography

This literature review identifies, summarises, and critiques the research undertaken in initial teacher education in New Zealand over the past decade. 

Most of the research selected for the review was based on qualitative and/or quantitative empirical data from student teachers, teacher educators, principals, associate teachers and beginning teachers.  It was found that much of the research was unpublished and small scale, conducted by the teacher education sector for the purpose of informing practice.

This project is perhaps one of the first in-depth research projects of children in kōhanga reo and kura kaupapa Māori, their educational and social environments, and their learning. This is the report for the first year of the study.
