The Assessment Resource Banks (ARBs) are computerised banks of assessment material that are available on the Internet.  They are linked to the current New Zealand curriculum statements in mathematics, science, and English.  This paper introduces the ARBs.  It is followed by a description of the diagnostic potential of the ARBs.  The final part is an interactive discussion of the diagnostic dimension of a selection of resources from the mathematics ARB.

The Assessment Resource Banks (ARBs) in English, mathematics, and science have been designed to reflect current New Zealand curriculum statements and provide schools with an ever-increasing range of valid and reliable assessment material.  They are available on the Internet and are now established as the main source of school-based assessment material for New Zealand schools.

This article argues that the rights of childen should be at the heart of early childhood education policy development.  It describes the free market framework inherited by the current government, highlights inequalities for children in income and participation in early childhood education, and describes policy initiatives.  These are analysed against yardsticks for effective government policy for children.

In December 2001, Auckland Metropolitan College (Metro), the only state-funded alternative secondary school in New Zealand, closed after eight highly critical ERO reviews in eight years.  Despite support from its own community, other schools, and the Schools Support Programme, Metro closed amidst long-standing confusion over its status and role in the New Zealand education system.

This paper uses analysis from the longitudinal Competent Children/Learners project that shows substantial television use at earlier ages can weaken children's literacy development at age 10.

It explores the reasons why this might be so in terms of the patterns of children's time use, and research on the visual nature of television and the language and narrative forms it uses. Relations between age-10 children's current and previous use of computers and their reading comprehension levels was less marked.

Techno magic - whizz or fizz?: The relationship between writing mode, editing process, and writing product

This report details the findings from a two-stage multi-method study which focused on the editing skills, processes, and tools used by 96 students, at three year levels, from two schools, and how these impacted on their writing. The student data were analysed by writing mode (computer or pencil), gender, literacy level (high or low), and year level (Year 3/4, 5, or 7).
