TeachNZ has responsibility for teacher supply within the Ministry of Education. This team administers a programme to recruit people into teaching in areas of shortage, currently primary Māori medium; ECE to support reo Māori and Pasifika children; and secondary Māori medium, reo Māori, mathematics, science and technology. A review of this scholarship programme has been prompted by an agreed commitment to recommendations made by the Secondary Teacher Supply Working Group. The focus of the review is mainly on equity and supply but will also look at the role of the scholarships in enhancing the status of the profession. There are two distinct phases. The first phase reviews existing data and information about the scholarship programme and the second identifies some potential future directions for the programme. The project finishes in April 2018.
