More on calculating correct stanines (with examples)

More on calculating correct stanines (with examples)

This posting looks at some examples of calcualting stanines at different times of the year.

In the previous posting, we talked about the importance of choosing the correct conversion table for reporting standardised test results as stanines. Here we explore some examples. What happens if you choose to use the current year level table when testing at the beginning of the year and again at the end of the year? When this approach is taken, you will have an accurate representation of the students’ stanine scores during Term 1 because the normed data is based on empirical data collected from students during this same point in time.

Warwick Elley on STAR

The original development of the STAR (Supplementary Test of Achievement in Reading) Test was carried out for NZCER by Dr Warwick Elley, now Emeritus Professor of Education. He also led the team that revised the test in 2010-2011. He has had a letter to the editor printed in the latest Listener, which we've posted in our new blog, NZCER on assessment.

Talking about Assessment

New blog on assessment

We have begun a new blog called NZCER on Assessment. The idea is to provide a place for information, ideas and support about all aspects of assessment. We'll be talking about NZCER's assessment tools and services but we also want to address wider assessment questions and link to relevant international material. The latest posting is from Emeritus Professor Warwick, writing in the Listener about NZCER's STAR test.

Welcome to our new blog, NZCER on Assessment. The idea is to provide a place for information, ideas and support about all aspects of assessment. We'll be talking about NZCER's assessment tools and services but we also want to address wider assessment questions and link to relevant international material. We reckon we've got quite a bit of expertise about assessment within NZCER. But we don't have all the answers and we are keen to tap into the ideas and practical experience of others working in the assessment field, including teachers using our assessment tools in schools.
