New Zealand is one of the few countries which have made the individual school the major locus of educational administration. This paper looks at some of the findings of a four-year NZCER qualitative study of ten 'ordinary' primary schools which have gained a reputation for the improvements they have made in recent years. Wylie and Mitchell try to show school development as a journey rather than a checklist of factors.

Videotaped sessions of students working on 'fair testing' investigation scenarios were analysed (N = 204). 

The analysis suggested avenues for the development of strategies that could help develop teachers' pedagogical content knowledge for teaching the skills used during a simple 'fair testing' investigation.  Most conversation during each activity focused on specific aspects of measuring or task completion so that the overall investigation appeared to become a series of disjointed episodes.

This paper provides an overview of research carried out for a doctoral thesis "Learning to transfer: The distance learner and transfer of learning" (Doyle, 2002). The thesis explored the question of transfer of learning from the perspective of distance students enrolled in a business degree.

Innovative Pathways is a longitudinal study of seven senior secondary programmes at low decile schools which were designed to assist students in their transition to the workforce and/or tertiary education.

This paper describes students' and teachers' thoughts, as the students were about to leave school at the end of 2002, on how these programmes helped to prepare students to take their next step after school.

This research builds on an earlier NEMP probe study which found that many teachers do not appear to actively teach students the key objectives of the "Developing Scientific Skills and Attitudes" strand of Science in the New Zealand Curriculum (Gilmore, 2001). The project sought to develop rich descriptions of children’s investigative actions, and to analyse these findings in the light of research literature that describes children’s actual and potential investigative skills development.

An important focus of the work is professional development in support of educational practice that is inclusive of diverse children, families, and whänau.  Specific emphasis is on evidence related to learning opportunities and outcomes through the provision of professional development for Mäori children, Pasifika children and children, from low socio-economic families.
