Assessment Matters 17: 2023

Kia ora koutou katoa. Welcome to the 2023 volume of Assessment Matters. At any level of education, from early childhood provision through to higher education, assessment is seen as critically important. Its importance is viewed as critical given that results from assessment serve many different purposes that are relevant to a wide range of stakeholders.

Much of the focus of international comparative studies of students’ achievement has been on New Zealand students’ falling standards. Most central examinations in upper secondary school were cancelled by the Norwegian Directorate for Education and Training (NDET) in 2020–22 due to COVID-19.
