Laying the foundations of mathematical modelling in phases 1 to 4

Abstract

Mathematical modelling is defined as a special form of problem solving that immerses ākonga in exploring solutions for real-world situations. Although mathematical modelling, as a process, is not explicit in our recent mathematics curriculum refresh in phases 1–4, mathematical modelling is certainly implicit within the current broad mathematical processes. International research shows that developing mathematical modelling competencies in these early phases is foundational for later phases where ākonga will encounter more complex problems that require applying mathematical modelling competencies to understand and find solutions. My research found that, to support the development of these competencies, mathematical modelling activities can be strategically designed to target ākonga use of specific modelling subprocesses. Throughout this approach, however, the role of the kaiako remains central to ensuring that ākonga engage with targeted subprocesses as intended.
