Week 18: Incomprehensible writing is impressive

Academicians amass venerated prestige by penning exceedingly labyrinthine text (i.e. incomprehensible writing impresses people.)

In the early 80s, Dr Scott Armstong tested the Dr Fox Phenomenon. His hypothesis was “that work which is unintelligible will not necessarily be recognized as such by scholars, and that in some cases the less intelligible a piece of prose the greater the respect it will earn from its readers or victims.”

According to his research findings, he was right.

This short article (set 1982: 2) summarises Dr Armstrong’s work.
