Kia tōkeke is a research-informed activity card deck designed by NZCER to support schools to use assessment and aromatawai practices to improve equity. Developed primarily for use in English-medium settings, and with a focus on assessment practice, Kia tōkeke also provides offerings for those who want to begin growing their understanding and use of aromatawai. Created for use in groups, Kia tōkeke provides a practical and engaging way for teachers, school leaders, and board members to build a shared understanding of what assessment and aromatawai mean for their school. The cards foster and support discussions around equity, current practice, and opportunities for change.
Kia tōkeke contains three sets of cards:
- Whakamāramahia ngā kupu — Assessment and aromatawai terms: A mix-and-match activity for exploring common assessment and aromatawai kupu and concepts. If you want to continue learning about a term, links are provided to free resources.
- Whakawhiti kōrero — Talking about assessment and aromatawai for equity: Conversation cards to help you discuss and reflect on the design and use of assessment and aromatawai, and what these practices mean for equity in your school.
- Whakamaheretia — Planning for equity in assessment and aromatawai: An activity that helps your team look at its current practices through an equity lens, identify areas you could target, and begin planning practical next steps.
A facilitator card provides guidance for running a session, but schools can use these cards in any way that suits them. Start with whichever activity best suits your team, use the three sets in any order, and work through them in one session or across several professional learning sessions.
