The transition to secondary school is a valuable opportunity to understand learners’ strengths, needs and next steps across literacy and mathematics. NZCER's PAT Pāngarau | Mathematics, PAT Pānui | Reading Comprehension and PAT Tuhituhi | Writing provide clear, robust progress over time information to support this - but how can you make the most of it?

NZCER's Education Advisors are hosting two free Progressive Achievement Test (PAT) webinars this month, one aimed at secondary leaders of literacy and one aimed at secondary leaders of mathematics. They will support you to turn assessment data into informed insights and clear actions - come along and learn how you might:

  • Understand the Year 9 starting point — identify the capabilities learners bring with them from primary and intermediate.
  • Track progress across Years 9 & 10 — see how learners develop and identify where progress is accelerating, stalling or requiring attention.
  • Turn patterns and evidence into action — identify strengths, gaps and areas of need to inform teaching, curriculum planning and targeted support.
  • Explore cohort and equity patterns — examine achievement and progress across year levels, ethnic groups and gender to identify trends and inform meaningful inquiry.
  • Evaluate impact — move beyond achievement at a point in time to ask: Are our learners making the progress we expect?

As HODs and HOFs look ahead to 2027, now is the time to use your evidence to understand what's working, where the challenges are, and where strategic action might be needed across your PAT Pāngarau, PAT Pānui or PAT Tuhituhi assessment data.

Secondary Literacy Leaders - Understanding Cross-subject Application and Strategic Use of PAT data
Secondary Maths Leaders - Understanding Strategic Use of PAT Pāngarau | Mathematics data (adaptive and static)

Both sessions will be hosted by Cathie Johnson, Kaitohu Mātauranga | Education Advisor at NZCER. There will be an opportunity to ask questions!
