Building a diverse and inclusive school community: A case study of a student-led video campaign for intercultural understandings

Abstract

Building cultural inclusivity is one of the major challenges many schools and teachers in Aotearoa New Zealand face today. This case study examines how a student-led video campaign in a multicultural high school strove to cultivate a culturally inclusive community, encouraging dialogue and empowering participants while students faced challenges in representing their cultures. Based on the interviews, the findings underscore students’ perceptions that mutual understanding is vital to building a good school community and that the sense of belonging is deeply connected with respect. In addition, the study highlighted the importance of supportive practices in successfully carrying out the campaign.
