Teacher survey on AI use in the classroom is now live - click here to participate!

The AI in Primary Schools project explores the perception and use of generative AI tools by Year 5-8 teachers and learners. We are interested in hearing from schools and students about AI in schools - read more here

If you do not use AI tools, we are still very keen to hear from you! We are looking for a wide range of perspectives, and your views – whether you use AI or not – matter to us and are important for constructing a complete picture of current perceptions and uses of AI in teaching and learning.

Research objectives

  • This study explores several key questions:
  • To what extent are AI tools being used in New Zealand’s primary schools?
  • How do teachers and students perceive AI?
  • How are these tools shaping teaching and learning experiences?
  • What opportunities and challenges are teachers and students encountering?

In addition to examining the current state of AI adoption, the project also considers its implications for effectiveness, equity, inclusivity, and ethical use in the classroom.

The study consists of two main phases, combining qualitative and quantitative methods.

Phase 1: Focus groups [closing soon]

In the first phase, focus groups with teachers and students will explore attitudes, experiences, and perceptions regarding AI tools in education. These discussions will inform the design of surveys used in the second phase, with the goal of ensuring that the questions reflect real-world classroom experiences. The focus groups will also help identify emerging trends, potential barriers, and new opportunities related to AI use in primary school environments.

Phase 2: Online surveys

The second phase involves paired online surveys—one for Year 5-8 teachers and (optionally) one for their students. These surveys will collect quantitative data on the frequency and context of AI usage, perceptions of its impact, and challenges encountered, including access-related disparities. By aligning student and teacher perspectives, the project aims to provide a well-rounded understanding of how AI is being thought about and experienced in primary education.

Broader aims

The AI in Primary Schools project hopes to inform the decisions of educators, policymakers, and communities. The study’s findings will offer insights into how AI can be integrated effectively, equitably, and ethically, helping to shape a future where AI becomes a meaningful tool for empowering young learners.
