Using PATs - for teachers and educators

Answers to some frequently asked questions about the PATs for teachers and educators.

How do I mark the PATs?

You can still mark them by hand using the marking keys. We also run a website where teachers can access automated marking and analysis.
Go to the NZCERMarking website.

How do I subscribe to the NZCER Marking service?

There is a form for you to complete and submit on the NZCERMarking website. Alternatively, you can email marking@nzcer.org.nz with the name of your school and chosen subscription option. You will be sent a username and password with instructions. Your school will then be sent an invoice. There are several changes to the way the NZCERMarking services will operate from 2010, which you can read about on the website.
Go to the NZCERMarking website.

How do I mark the tests online myself?

The computer screen is set up so that all you need to do is type in the student's name and then enter each letter they selected, and the computer will actually mark it . You don't need to enter the raw score.
Another option is to pay NZCER for machine marking, so that the student data is automatically uploaded to the website.

Why should I use the NZCERMarking website?

  • it saves busy teachers a lot of time - instead of scoring tests, you are using the results
  • you get a full range of reports, analysing achievement at individual, class, school and question level
  • your students can sit PAT:Mathematics online and you get the data immediately
  • it covers PAT:Listening Comprehension, PAT:Mathematics, PAT:Reading Comprehension and PAT:Reading Vocabulary and STAR tests [Read more about STAR
  • it's easy to use with fast turnaround

What does the NZCER Marking Service cost?

Can students sit PATs online?

Students can sit PAT:Mathematics and PAT:Reading Vocabulary online. Schools need to be subscribed to the marking service and then pay $2 per student.

All options give you access to the range of analysis reports online.
Of course, we can still send you printed test results and analysis (now in colour).
